Company History

In 1999, four entertainment executives and artists established Idea and Design Works (IDW), which has evolved into a full-service graphic design, production and publishing company for comic books, graphic novels, and related products.

In 2000, Idea and Design Works formed its publishing division, IDW Publishing, which initially focused on producing a small number of high-quality publications and has grown into a fully staffed publishing company that provides services to international clients in the comic book and entertainment genre.

With its outstanding creativity, production and publishing services, the company has truly established itself as a prominent player in the comic book and graphic novel marketplace. IDW was also named Publisher of the Year in 2004, 2005, and 2006 by Diamond Comic Distributors.

The company's first title, Uno Fanta: The Art of Ashley Wood, received rave reviews and continues to be heavily reordered by both comic shops and mainstream bookstores. The company's second title, Popbot, also by creator Ashley Wood, was similarly well-received and acknowledged with two Spectrum Gold Awards.

In 2002, IDW's first comic book miniseries, 30 Days of Night, started a seven-figure bidding war between Dreamworks, MGM and Senator International—with Senator International winning and Sam Raimi attached to produce the film adaptation. 30 Days of Night was named the #1 Hot Comic of the Month by Wizard Magazine (several months running) and the #1 Breakout Product of 2002. It was also the #4 best-selling graphic novel of 2003 and has won multiple awards. The movie is currently in post-production and is scheduled for release in October 2007.

IDW also publishes comic books based on the hit CBS show CSI: Crime Scene Investigation”. The company's other licensed comics include such diverse properties as Sony's Underworld; FXs The Shield; Paramount's Star Trek; Fox's 24 and Angel; Hasbro's The Transformers; Universal's Scarface, Land of the Dead and Shaun of the Dead; and Konami's Silent Hill, Castlevania, and Metal Gear Solid.

As a result of its reputation in the industry, IDW has built an impressive client base, including Activision, Artisan Entertainment, Bandai America, Brady Games, Cartoon Network, Dimension Films, Electronic Arts, Fox Family, Golden Books, LEGO, Lion's Gate, "The Man Show," Microsoft, Pepsi, Pioneer, Revolution Films, Square, Simon & Schuster, Trimark Pictures and Upper Deck. The company also works with foreign licensing agents to sell their comics around the world, with titles being published in multiple languages and crossing dozens of regions.

Over the past few years, IDW titles have been featured in major media outlets, including in USA Today, CNN, E!, TV Guide, Entertainment Weekly, Access Hollywood, Emmy Magazine, GamePro, Official US Playstation Magazine, PSM and Play.

The IDW team combines extensive design, production, entertainment industry and publishing experience to deliver top-notch comic book, graphic novel and trading card products to its fans and clients.
