The Library of American Comics Goes Daily

New Library of American Comics ESSENTIALS series starting inSeptember

San Diego, CA (April 18, 2012) – IDW Publishing is proud toannounce The Library of American ComicsESSENTIALS, a new series from its multiple EisnerAward-winning imprint that is "the gold standard for archival comicstrip reprints.” Each volume of LOACESSENTIALS will reprint early daily newspaper strips thatare essential to the history of comics presented in a novel format,11" wide by 4.25" high, each page containing a single dailystrip.
“It's different from our other books which generally containtwo or three years of strips printed three to a page,” saysLOAC Creative Director Dean Mullaney. “Byreproducing the strips one per page in an oblong format, it allowsus to have an experience similar to what newspaper buyers had fiftyto a hundred years ago—reading the comics one day at atime.”
Every volume in the series contains a year's worth of dailies boundin hardcover, retailing for $19.99. Each page will showcase thetitle given to that daily by the cartoonist, plus the weekday anddate. In addition to recreating the feeling of reading sequentialcomics one at a time, the idea sprang in part from HaroldGray's set of bound Little Orphan Annieproofbooks. Syndicate proofs come in differing varieties, butdailies are often bound annually, in a thick one-strip-per-pagebook.

“When reading a great run of dailies,” adds AssociateEditor Bruce Canwell, “the proofbook formatcreates an irresistible urge to flip the page and see whathappens in the next day's strip.”
