The Complete CORTO MALTESE To Be Published In English For The First Time

Long before the term“graphic novel” entered the popular lexicon, theItalian cartoonist Hugo Pratt pioneered thelong-form “drawn literature” story in 1967 when heintroduced Corto Maltese in the epic adventure “The Ballad ofthe Salty Sea.”

Pratt set the standard for all adult adventure comicsin Europe, and by the mid-1970s Corto was thecontinent’s most popular series and Pratt the world’sleading graphic novelist. “He is one of the true masters ofcomic art,” says Frank Miller.

Pratt’s books remain best sellers in Europe andare published in a dozen languages yet until now, CortoMaltese has been poorly represented in English.

“We intend to change all that,”says EuroComics editor Dean Mullaney. “Prattdeserves a first-rate American edition and America deservesCorto Maltese. We’re proud to publish Hugo Pratt asthe first graphic novelist in our EuroComics imprint; we’resimilarly pleased to publish him alongside MiltonCaniff and Alex Toth, two importantartistic influences on Pratt, from our long-standing Library ofAmerican Comics line.”
